Chapter 18

Cycling Aether into his Sun Circuits, Hiran grabbed Lila and leaped away. A heartbeat later, tons of synthsteel and plastic crashed down upon where they’d been standing.

Light from the space station’s atmospheric illuminators flooded into the hangar, outlining a sinuous, serpentine silhouette as broad as Chaoswing. Cobalt-hued scales sheathed its flesh like plates of armor.

Hissing drool dripped from its massive, fang-filled snout. Four green eyes blazed with rage beneath its brow. It flexed the scythe-like claws tipping the eight heavily muscled limbs protruding from its torso.

The khigar roared, filling the hangar’s interior with the odor of its fetid breath. Arcs of lightning flared into existence down the length of its horn, which was ten times longer and larger than the one stowed upon Chaoswing.

That’s definitely a khigar, and it’s much larger than the one I killed back in the day. Hiran channeled as much Aether he could into his Sun Circuits, causing them to blaze brightly with golden light. His body felt stronger and lighter immediately.

Still carrying Lila in his arms, Hiran broke out into a full-on sprint, just barely avoiding the torrent of lightning that ripped from the khigar’s horn and turned everything it touched into molten slag.

“Combat analysis suggests that the only weapons we have on hand capable of inflicting any damage at all upon this Star beast are Chaoswing’s plasma lances and the Aetheric Weapon you seized from the Huntress,” Lila said, as Hiran carried her to the ship’s rear ramp and set her down.

“That’s what I figured,” he said, raising his right hand and reaching out with his will. A streak of blue light soared from the depths of the ship, before coming to a halt in the air just above his palm. It was Azure Fang. Hiran had managed to attune the Aetheric Weapon to himself after hours of meditation. “Did it follow us here because of the horn we have on board?”

“That is likely. Khigars reproduce asexually and spawn only one offspring at a time, which they nurture into full adulthood over the course of several centuries. Judging by the size of the one confronting us now, the khigar Maxwell killed was its adolescent offspring.”

“And now it’s here to avenge its dead child.” Hiran found himself clenching his fists so tightly that his knuckles had turned white. He took a deep breath and nodded to Lila. “I’ll take it on. See if you can get Chaoswing flying and its guns firing on the khigar.”

“Affirmative,” she said, before climbing up the ramp, which retracted behind her.

Klaxons blared, their shrill notes filling the air. More metal and plastic fell as the khigar tore the ceiling further apart and forced its bulk into the hangar. Its gaze was fixed on Chaoswing, which carried the horn of its kin, but all four of its eyes snapped directly to Hiran as he charged toward it, Azure Fang hovering over his shoulder.

Hiran thrust his left hand forward, extending his index and middle fingers while tucking the other two into his thumb as he’d seen Zaina do.
